Would you like to access your system remotely from a computer or a mobile device? You can do this using the Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) tool. You can access files, launch programs, troubleshoot issues, and more on a remote Windows machine as long as it is powered on and configured for remote connections.
What is a Remote Desktop?
Whether at home or in the office, remote desktop connections enable you to access multiple Windows computers from a distance. Suppose you use a virtual private network (VPN) or another security gateway to access the company network outside the office. In that case, your company’s IT department may permit you to use RDC to connect to company computers. Windows 10 or 11 Pro or Enterprise is required to establish or accept a remote connection.
The Home editions of Windows 10 and 11 are incompatible with Remote Desktop. Windows includes Remote Desktop Connection, but you can also download it as a Universal app for Windows 10 and 11. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Client (RDC) app is available for free download on Mac, iOS, and Android if you wish to access and control a computer from a non-Windows device.
How Do I Use Remote Desktop?
Using a remote desktop with an user-friendly remote desktop solution is not complicated, with only a few steps. You can access your devices remotely.
- First, before you can access a computer remotely, you’ll need to log in to it from another location. Connect to this machine remotely by going to its Settings > System > Remote Desktop menu.
- To enable remote access, select the appropriate option from Enable Remote Desktop and Remote Desktop, respectively. Activate the option by choosing Confirm.
- When using Windows 10, turn on the ” Allow connections when this computer is plugged in” and “Make this computer discoverable on private networks” options. Either setting can be viewed or altered by clicking the corresponding “Show settings” link. The two choices, however, can be left active for the time being.
- Select the link for “Advanced Settings” instead. Check the box to ensure that all connecting computers use Network Level Authentication (NLA). Due to the authentication requirements of NLA, remote connections over the same network are much safer.
If you are only establishing a connection to another machine within the same network, you can skip over the “External connections” section. The port number used to accept remote connections is displayed in the Remote Desktop port section.
By design, any user with access to the remote computer’s administrative account can use it. If you’re already logged in to Windows with an account with administrative privileges—a Microsoft Account or a company user account—then you can use that same account to log in remotely.
How to Connect to a Remote Desktop from Windows 8 Below:
Let’s say you’re at home and want to access this remote PC from your current machine.
- You can access Windows Remote Desktop in Windows 8.1 by pressing the Win key + S to open the Search tool, then typing “windows remote desktop,” and select the result. You can do so if you want to access the Remote Desktop Connection in Windows 7.
- Clicking the Start button, go to All Programs, then click the Accessories folder. Within the Computer field of the RDC window, enter the hostname or IP address of the remote computer you wish to access.
- To access your account, select the gear icon and enter your username and password. Check the box labeled “Allow me to save credentials” and then click Connect if you want to keep your certificates and avoid entering them each time.
- In the password field, type in your password. Select the “Remember Me” box if you prefer not to be prompted to enter your password each time you log in. It’s safe to proceed by clicking OK. You’ll get an error saying you can’t confirm the remote machine’s identity. Select “Don’t ask me again” and click “Yes” to prevent further prompts.
- It’s time to connect to the remote machine so you can access its resources and complete your desired tasks. A blue menu bar at the top of the screen provides access to various connections. You can lock the progress bar, and its speed can be viewed using the icons on the panel’s left. The rightmost buttons let you adjust the small window’s size and close it, while the leftmost button ends the remote session.
How to Use the Remote Desktop App for Windows 10 and 11:
Microsoft Remote Desktop is a third-party app for Windows 10 and 11 that can be used in place of the built-in Remote Desktop Connection tool. The app can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store and then used.
- Connect by clicking the “Add” button and choosing the computers you wish to join. Enter the hostname or IP address of the computer you want to join.
- Leave the User account field blank to be prompted for credentials each time. Create a new report by entering the username and password if you don’t see a plus sign (+) next to a user account.
- You can then enter an optional display name as a user account’s shorthand. To save your work, select the Save option.
- Access the remote computer by double-clicking its icon. Please confirm the following information at the certificate screen: Simply click Connect without further certificate prompts.
You have successfully established a connection to the remote computer. A black panel on the side of the screen replaces the traditional blue bar at the top of the screen when using the Remote Desktop application.
You can zoom in and out by clicking the magnifier icon in the upper-right corner, while the ellipsis toggles between full-screen and windowed views. If you want to sever your connection, click the ellipsis and then choose Disconnect.
