Jack Vidgen has said he felt ‘put on the spot’ when radio host Kyle Sandilands asked him at age 14 whether he was dating anyone.

Kyle interviewed Jack the day after he won Australia’s Got Talent back in 2011, and innocently asked whether the young singer had ‘a boyfriend or girlfriend’.

Jack, 25, who is now openly gay, told Yahoo Lifestyle on Thursday the question caught him off guard because he was unsure of his sexuality at the time.

Reflecting on the interview from more than a decade ago, Jack said he knew Kyle’s intention was never to ‘out’ him and emphasised that the two are now good friends.

‘He put me on the spot and I mean, now I’m friends with Kyle and I know it would never have been coming from a place of wanting to out me because he loves the gays. But I was like, “Holy s**t, does someone know something that I don’t know? Have I said something? Has someone found out something?”‘ he said.

Jack went on to say he ‘didn’t know’ his sexuality at the time and was in a ‘safer position’ to explore his feelings when he stepped away from the spotlight at age 16.

‘I quit music for about five years and within that time was when I came out. So I think it helped me in a lot of ways doing that,’ he said.

During his appearance on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! last year, Jack said he used to be worried people would think he was ‘perverted’ or ‘dirty’ for being gay.

The singer told AFL legend Robert ‘Dipper’ DiPierdomenico that fame likely delayed his decision to come out.

‘I feel like I probably would have been ready to come out earlier,’ he said.

‘But probably because, just everything that happened and being known and in the public… and also [Australia’s Got Talent],’ he added.

Jack revealed how he had a girlfriend from age 17 to 19, but he described it as more of a ‘glorified friendship’, and that when he finally came out it felt ‘incredible’.

‘Oh it was incredible. [It was] one of the most incredible feelings of my life,’ he said.

Jack admitted, however, that he struggled with how some would perceive his sexuality.

‘It becomes just something in your head that’s like… dirty and disturbed. And it becomes… you think something’s perverted when it really isn’t,’ he said.
