What is the Procedure to Get Your GST Number?

What are the Goods and Services Tax? 

Earlier, businesses had to pay various indirect taxes on goods and services. These taxes varied as per the state and centre norms. To make the taxing process uniform, the government of India launched the Goods and Services Tax and merged all the other taxes such as VAT, purchase tax, entry tax, CESS, lottery and gambling taxes and more. 

The GST is included in the final product price. Now, you will have to direct the acquired GST to the government as a seller or a trader. Here are the different types of Goods and Services Tax-

Who is Eligible for GST Registration? 

Here is the type of entities that must apply for the GST registration process- 

  • All the individuals who were registered as a taxpayer before GST came into effect 
  • Casual taxable and non-resident taxable people 
  • E-commerce aggregators 
  • People who pay taxes under the reverse charge mechanism 
  • All the businesses with a turnover of Rs. 40 Lakhs. 
  • Businesses in North-Eastern states, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh will have to register for GST once the business exceeds Rs. 10 Lakh
  • Supplier agents 

How to Get GST Number? 

You will first have to register on the online GST portal to get your GST number. Here are the steps to register on the GST online portal- 

Step 1- Visit the official portal of Goods and Services Tax 

Step 2- Select the register now link under the taxpayer option 

Step 3- Click on new registration 

Step 4- Fill in the details- 

  • Click on taxpayer 
  • Enter your district and state 
  • Fill in the name of your business and PAN details 
  • Carefully enter the email id and contact details 
  • Enter the captcha and then proceed 

Step 5- Enter the OTP sent on your mentioned phone or email id 

Step 6- Note down the Temporary Reference Number (TRN)

Step 7- Refresh the page and visit the homepage again 

Step 8- Click on register 

Step 9- Click on Temporary Reference Number 

Step 10- Enter the captcha details as shown on the screen 

Step 11- Enter the OTP received on your mobile number or email id

Step 12- Now, here on this page, you can check the GST application status live 

Step 13- On the right side, click on the edit icon 

Step 14- Now, you will have to fill in the 10 sections with the correct details to make your GST registration successful. 

Step 15- Attach all the necessary documents to support your application request 

Step 16- Go to the verification page and tick off the declaration by using any of one methods- 

  • Via electronic verification code where code will be sent to your registered phone number 
  • Via the e-sign method where OTP will be sent to the registered mobile, which is attached with an Aadhaar card 
  • For the companies registering, the application will be submitted using a digital signature certificate 

Step 17- once you submit all the details, it will show success on the screen. You will receive the Application Reference Number on the mobile number and the id 

Step 18- With the help of an ARN number, check your application status on the GST portal 

Once you complete the process, the GST officer will approve your application, and you will receive your unique GST number for your business. To log in, you will also be given a username and password to log in. Remember to log in via the First-time login option and set your new username and password. 

After three to five days, you can download your GST registration certificate and be eligible to pay GST via the portal. 

Documents Required to Apply for GST Number 

Here’s a list of documents you need to apply for the GST- 

  • Applicant’s or business PAN details 
  • Aadhaar Card copy 
  • Business registration proof 
  • Business registration proof 
  • Id and address proof with business partners and directors’ photographs 
  • Bank account details 
  • Digital copy of signatures
