A former prime civil servant has claimed Boris Johnson was briefed “in person” about allegations surrounding Chris Pincher in 2019.
In a bombshell letter, Lord Simon McDonald disputed Downing Street’s account about what the prime minister understood about the previous deputy chief whip.
McDonald, the previous lasting secretary at the foreign place of work, explained No.10 designed “inaccurate claims” to the media when they explained no formal complaints from Pincher have been ever designed.
For days ministers have insisted Johnson was not knowledgeable of unique allegations against Pincher when he was appointed deputy main whip – whose position it is to uphold self-control among the fellow Tory MPs.
Pincher, the MP for Tamworth, was suspended as a Conservative Party MP past week above allegations he groped two guys at a personal members’ club in London.

On Monday, Downing Road reported the PM was mindful of media experiences and some allegations about Pincher’s misconduct that ended up “either resolved or did not progress to a formal complaint”.
On the other hand, in a letter to the parliament’s criteria watchdog McDonald wrote: “Inaccurate promises by 10 Downing Avenue proceed to be recurring in the media. On 3 July, the BBC web site described: ‘No formal issues in opposition to [Pincher] were ever made’.
“This is not accurate. In the summertime of 2019, shortly immediately after he was appointed minister of point out at the foreign business office, a team of officers complained to me about Mr Pincher’s behaviour.”
McDonald reported he lifted the allegations – which have been similar to all those produced final week – with the relevant official at the cabinet office.

No.10 initially claimed that Johnson was “not aware” of any unique allegations when he appointed Pincher as deputy main whip in February. They went on to modify their line, expressing Johnson knew of allegations that were either settled or did not development to a official criticism.
Nevertheless, McDonald claimed: “The first No.10 line is even now not exact. Johnson was briefed in man or woman about the initiation and outcome of the investigation. There was a ‘formal complaint’.
