The Grants’ previous dwelling in Toronto’s Shorelines neighbourhood experienced lots of character. The semi-detached century home—purchased for $750,000 in 2015—had three bedrooms, two loos, stained-glass home windows and initial wood floors. What it didn’t have was house: the kitchen area was modest, and brothers Jack and Charlie dutifully shared a solitary bedroom.

Factors bought even tighter when John commenced functioning from home in the course of the pandemic. He took above Sarah’s business, which only deepened his extended-held motivation for larger sized dwelling quarters. “Each of us desired extra tranquil house,” John states. He obtained in the routine of sending actual estate listings to Sarah, who—despite her experienced packing skills—wasn’t as inclined to shift.

Her position softened throughout a excursion to Haliburton, Ontario, in the summertime of 2020. The Grants’ cottage was around a driving selection, and they took entire benefit of the respiratory home. “We utilised to see mates indoors all the time,” Sarah states. “Then, for the duration of the pandemic, we targeted far more on out of doors pursuits, like biking. John took the boys golfing just about every morning in Haliburton, and they just cherished it,” Sarah suggests. The pair also understood they experienced restricted time right before their sons started out objecting to bunking alongside one another in Toronto.

The Grants originally regarded as leasing out their Toronto home and briefly going to a waterfront residence in Huntsville, a cottage town in Muskoka, but Sarah wasn’t bought. “It’s a gorgeous trip spot, but it didn’t come to feel like a calendar year-spherical in shape,” she suggests. They briefly entertained a renovation, but by that place, Sarah was producing peace with the plan of selling. “I generally explained I would transfer for anything, not just to depart Toronto,” she states. “I just hadn’t observed the area that manufactured me want to go.”

The hunt

The city’s hold on the Grants loosened when a close friend returned from a journey to Kelowna, B.C., in the summer season of 2020 and raved about its seashores, standard family-friendliness and mountain views. With their Toronto dream on its last legs, Sarah bought John a e-book termed Homes by the Shore for Christmas. A person of the highlighted properties was found on the nearby Scarborough Bluffs, which led them to scout out the area’s households. None produced the grade.

The pair eventually requested their Toronto agent to set them in touch with a realtor in Kelowna. Very, the initially listing despatched their way turned out to be the winner. “John took one particular appear and said, ‘This is it,’ ” Sarah states. “It” was a five-in addition-1-bed room, 4-lavatory detached house overlooking Okanagan Lake. The home was almost everything the Grants could question for: it experienced a 4-vehicle garage, a principal bed room with a stroll-in closet and ensuite bathroom, a stunning modern-day kitchen area, a huge media area and a modest swimming pool.

The neighbourhood was found in a stellar college district, shut to bakeries and sushi (Sarah’s favorite) and inside a 20-moment drive of three wineries and tennis and soccer facilities. The only trade-off was walkability—the dwelling sat on a particularly steep element of the escarpment. That didn’t stop John and Sarah from coming into a prosperous bid of $2.3 million in January. Shortly right after, Sarah discovered herself expertly packing up her beloved Toronto digs. In early Could, the family—and, individually, their belongings—made the cross-country trek to Kelowna by vehicle.

The Grants have had no challenge meeting new families. “It appears like anyone I know has a friend right here,” Sarah says. It’s been tricky for them to imagine their new lifetime in Kelowna is not a holiday vacation. This summer, the Grants are organizing seaside visits, exploratory weekend excursions and a great deal of barbecues with new pals. When Jack and Charlie took their first swim this spring, Sarah snapped a photograph that is a around carbon duplicate of the deal with of Properties on the Shore, panoramic views and all.
